The instructor had never seen anything like it.
But there was one final surprise.
When the gynecologist returned to the college the following week, the instructor wasn’t waiting to discuss his grade.
He had something else to say.
“You know,” the instructor said, “after watching what you did, I think you’ve made the wrong career choice.”
The gynecologist looked confused.
“Why?”
The instructor smiled.
“Because I’ve spent thirty years teaching mechanics.”
He pointed toward the engine.
“And I’ve never seen anyone work on one like that.”
Then he laughed.
“But if I ever need surgery…”
He paused.
“…I know exactly who I’m calling.”
The gynecologist smiled.
Maybe he hadn’t escaped his old career after all.
He had simply discovered that his most valuable professional skill wasn’t medicine or mechanics.
It was something much simpler:
When everyone else says something can’t be done, he finds a way to do it.
