The $1.45 Under the Napkin

I worked the graveyard shift at a little diner off the highway.

It wasn’t glamorous.

The coffee was cheap, the booths were cracked, and the neon sign outside flickered whenever it rained.

But it paid my bills.

Most nights, the customers were truckers, nurses getting off work, construction workers, or people who simply didn’t have anywhere else to be at three in the morning.
