My hands began shaking.
The recording contained only a few minutes.
Mabel’s frightened voice.
An adult’s voice.
And enough evidence for investigators to connect what had happened to several other children.
Then came the final revelation.
The investigator looked at me.
“Mabel wasn’t the only child.”
There were other families.
Other children.
Other parents who had been told they were imagining things.
The swimsuit hadn’t just been a strange habit.
It had been Mabel’s silent way of saying:
“Something is happening to me, and I don’t know how to explain it.”
Months later, Mabel stopped wearing swimsuits under her clothes.
She started sleeping through the night again.
And one evening, while I was tucking her into bed, she wrapped her arms around my neck.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Can I wear my swimsuit tomorrow?”
I smiled.
“Of course.”
She grinned.
“Because we’re going swimming.”
And for the first time in months, there was nothing hidden underneath her clothes.
Just a little girl getting ready to be a little girl again.
