I knew something was wrong with my husband the moment he walked into the kitchen one Tuesday morning.
It wasn’t ordinary body odor.
It wasn’t sweat.
It wasn’t the smell of dirty laundry.
It was something so unbelievably awful that I actually stepped backward.
I stared at him.
“Did you… step in something?”
He looked confused.
“No. Why?”
I hesitated.
Because I didn’t know how to tell my husband of fourteen years that he smelled like something had died inside his clothes.
“Nothing,” I whispered.
But it wasn’t nothing.
Over the next few weeks, the smell became unbearable.
I opened windows whenever he entered the room.
I started sitting at the opposite end of the couch.
At night, I secretly turned on the bedroom fan and pretended I was too warm.
My husband noticed.
“You’re avoiding me,” he finally said.
“I’m not.”
“You moved your pillow to the other side of the bed.”
“I couldn’t sleep.”
He looked hurt.
And that made me feel terrible.
I loved this man.
We had been married for fourteen years. We had survived financial problems, family arguments, stressful jobs, and everything else life had thrown at us.
So I couldn’t understand why something as ridiculous as a smell was suddenly becoming a wall between us.
I began researching possible causes.
Stress.
Diet.
Medications.
Hormonal changes.
Skin infections.
Liver problems.
Kidney problems.
Even rare medical conditions.
The more I searched, the more frightened I became.
What if something was seriously wrong?
What if the smell was a warning that his body was failing?
I finally convinced him to see a specialist.
He wasn’t happy about it.
“I don’t need a doctor because I smell bad.”
“You don’t smell bad,” I said.
He raised an eyebrow.
I sighed.
“You smell… unusual.”
He laughed nervously.
But I could tell he was embarrassed.
So I promised to go with him.
At the appointment, the doctor asked several questions and examined him.
Then he told my husband to wait in the examination room.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
I sat in the waiting room, nervously scrolling through my phone.
Suddenly, the door opened.
The doctor stepped out.
He looked at me.
Then he looked toward the examination room.
His lips twitched.
His face turned bright red.
“Ma’am,” he said, trying desperately to keep a straight face, “you may want to come in and see this yourself.”
My heart dropped.
“Is something seriously wrong?”
The doctor shook his head.
“No. But… I think you’re going to want to hear what he has to say.”
I followed him inside.
My husband was sitting on the examination table.
His face was completely red.
He wouldn’t look at me.
“Honey?”
Nothing.
I looked at the doctor.
The doctor cleared his throat.
“I’ll let him explain.”
Then he walked out.
My husband took a deep breath.
“Honey…”
“Yes?”
“There’s something I should have told you a long time ago.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
He stared at the floor.
“I’ve known about the smell.”
I blinked.
“You knew?”
He nodded.
“For months.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I was embarrassed.”
I stared at him.
“What exactly is happening?”
He reached into his jacket pocket.
Then he pulled out a tiny plastic container.
I looked at it.
“What is that?”
He swallowed.
“An online supplement.”
I frowned.
“What kind of supplement?”
He hesitated.
“One that supposedly helps with testosterone, energy, and… body chemistry.”
The doctor had apparently discovered that my husband wasn’t suffering from some mysterious disease at all.
He had been taking a completely unregulated homemade supplement he had purchased online.
And according to the doctor, one of its ingredients was fermented seafood extract.
My mouth fell open.
“FERMENTED SEAFOOD?”
My husband nodded miserably.
“I thought it was natural.”
The doctor had examined the container and immediately recognized the source of the smell.
The product had been improperly stored.
Worse, my husband had been taking far more than the recommended amount because he believed it would make him feel stronger.
The doctor explained that the supplement could cause digestive changes, sweating, and an unusually strong odor.
I stared at my husband.
“So you’ve been walking around smelling like a dead fish because of some internet supplement?”
He lowered his head.
“Yes.”
For the first time in weeks, I laughed.
I couldn’t help it.
The doctor laughed too.
Even my husband eventually started laughing.
But then the doctor became serious.
He told my husband to stop taking it immediately and explained that anything marketed as a “natural miracle supplement” wasn’t automatically safe.
We went home that afternoon.
My husband threw the bottle into the trash.
For the next several days, the smell slowly disappeared.
And strangely enough, something else changed too.
We started talking again.
Really talking.
He admitted that he had been terrified of getting older.
He’d secretly worried that he wasn’t as strong, energetic, or attractive as he used to be.
He didn’t want me to see him struggling.
So he tried to fix everything himself.
I took his hand.
“You don’t have to hide things from me,” I told him.
He looked at me.
“Even when I smell like fermented shrimp?”
I laughed.
“Especially then.”
We thought that was the end of the story.
It wasn’t.
Three weeks later, I was cleaning our bedroom when I noticed something strange.
There was a second package hidden behind his dresser.
I froze.
It was another supplement.
My heart sank.
I called his name.
He walked into the room.
The moment he saw the package in my hand, his face went pale.
“What’s this?”
He didn’t answer.
“Tell me.”
Finally, he sighed.
“That isn’t mine.”
I stared at him.
“Then whose is it?”
He pointed toward the hallway.
Our teenage son slowly appeared around the corner.
His face was bright red.
“I can explain.”
I looked at my husband.
Then at our son.
Then back at the mysterious package.
“What is going on?”
Our son sighed.
“Dad wasn’t the only one who ordered something online.”
Silence.
“What did you order?”
He looked at the floor.
“A prank spray.”
My husband covered his face.
I stared at both of them.
“You’re telling me…”
Our son nodded.
“I bought it because I wanted to prank Dad.”
My husband suddenly shouted, “YOU’RE THE REASON IT GOT WORSE?”
Our son nodded.
The doctor hadn’t been laughing because my husband had some mysterious disease.
He had been laughing because during the examination, he discovered traces of the prank spray all over my husband’s jacket and realized the terrible smell wasn’t entirely coming from him.
For weeks, my husband had been taking a disgusting supplement…
while our son had secretly been spraying his jacket with an odor-producing prank spray.
The combination had created a smell so powerful that the doctor said he’d never encountered anything quite like it.
I stood there speechless.
Then I started laughing.
My husband looked at our son.
Our son looked at me.
And eventually, all three of us burst out laughing.
My husband shook his head.
“I almost went to the hospital because of you!”
Our son grinned.
“I didn’t think it would last that long.”
I smiled.
That terrible smell had nearly caused a serious medical scare—and almost put a permanent distance between my husband and me.
But in the end, it uncovered something more important.
My husband wasn’t sick.
He wasn’t hiding another woman.
He wasn’t having some terrible medical crisis.
He was simply embarrassed about getting older.
And our son had accidentally turned that embarrassment into the worst-smelling family secret we’d ever had.
To this day, whenever my husband buys anything online, he looks at me first and asks:
“Should I show this to the doctor before I take it?”
And I always answer:
“Only if you promise to let me come with you.”
