I honestly believed that Jack’s death would be the hardest thing I’d ever face. But then, eleven days after his funeral, I came across a cell phone inside a box in the garage, and suddenly grief no longer felt like the scariest thing in my home.

Jack passed away just two weeks ago. It’s crazy how it still feels like no more than a day has gone by. Every now and then I’m sure he’s about to drive up and walk right through the door. Instead, everything remains frozen in place. His jacket is still draped over the dining-room chair. His coffee cup sits next to the sink because I still can’t bring myself to wash it. The kids keep asking questions I don’t know how to answer.

I’ve been forcing myself to get through each day so I don’t completely fall apart. I make breakfast, help the kids with homework, do the laundry, and sign school papers. The moment no one is watching, I cry in the bathroom or the laundry room.

Jack’s sister, Karen, stayed glued to my side through it all. At the time I was grateful for her company. She brought food, looked after the children, held my hand so tightly it hurt, and seemed just as devastated as I was. Yet there was something strange she kept repeating: that I shouldn’t touch anything related to Jack’s work right away. She said the factory needed time to sort through their paperwork first and that I shouldn’t stress myself. It sounded reasonable then. Now it makes me sick.

Two days after the funeral a man named Nolan showed up with a basket of fruit and a folder. He claimed to be an HR representative, but his business card read “Director of Employee Relations and Risk Management.”

We sat at the kitchen table while he explained that the paperwork was simply standard compensation and benefits forms for the kids because Jack had died in a “workplace accident.” When I began reading, I realized it was a massive settlement release. Signing it meant legally accepting that Jack’s death was only a tragic accident, giving up any right to sue, and promising never to speak about anything connected to his job.

Nolan slid a pen toward me and Karen quietly urged me to sign so we could get the money. Everything felt completely wrong. I said I needed time. Nolan gave me one of those polite, empty smiles, mentioned corporate deadlines, and left with Karen.

The second they were out the door I went straight to the garage. I hadn’t wanted to clean it because I could barely stand being in there, yet I knew deep down that Jack must have left something behind. And sure enough, hidden behind a false bottom in his toolbox and connected to an extra battery pack was another phone. That was pure Jack—quiet, cautious, and never trusting a word from his superiors.

There was only one video on it, recorded the night Jack died. The camera looked as if it had been placed high on a shelf in the garage. Jack stood beside his workbench holding a large envelope when Karen suddenly appeared. What shocked me most was her face—she didn’t look heartbroken. She looked terrified.

Karen demanded the flash drive, but Jack refused, telling her it didn’t belong to her. Panicking, she argued that her name was tied to the documents too. Jack’s voice turned cold as he accused her of signing false safety reports for dangerous factory machinery. He said she was clearing machines that hadn’t even been inspected and that parts listed as replaced had never been ordered. He told her production line seven was completely unsafe, yet management refused to shut it down because they were losing too much money.

Karen looked frantic and warned Jack that the company would destroy him if the truth came out. Jack said he already knew why she had shown up begging for the drive. Then he revealed he was meeting a woman named Miriam from the state safety office the next morning and believed he would be safe once he handed over the files. Karen begged him not to go, but when he questioned her she denied knowing anything and rushed out.

After she left, Jack walked up to the camera looking exhausted. He told me the envelope in the garage was only a decoy and that the real evidence was hidden inside Melissa’s shoebox of birthday cards. Before the video ended he warned me never to sign anything from Nolan.

Jack died on Tuesday. As I climbed the stairs my steps were so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat. Melissa was asleep, her stuffed rabbit beside her, while I searched her closet for that shoebox. Sure enough, a flash drive was taped inside.

When I plugged the drive into my computer my stomach dropped. Inside were photos of broken equipment, fake inspection documents, forged receipts, and emails from company employees. All of it proved management had deliberately hidden critical safety problems. People had already been injured on the line and were paid to stay silent. Jack had documented everything the moment he uncovered what was happening.

On top of that, Karen had already been promoted to compliance safety officer while all of this was going on. She wasn’t fixing the problems; she was covering them up for the company. Jack’s note indicated that Miriam already had enough information to show the factory was operating a death trap.

I went back to the garage, but the decoy envelope from the video was gone; someone had gotten there first and searched through Jack’s things. Under a tray of screws, though, I found a business card for Miriam at the State Industrial Safety Review Board. On the back was a handwritten note: “If I don’t get to the meeting, then Miriam is the only one who can deliver this to the investigators.”

The next morning I called from a pay phone at the local supermarket, just to be safe. The moment I mentioned Jack’s name, Miriam’s voice dropped. She made certain I hadn’t signed any papers Nolan had brought. While we talked I watched a black sedan roll slowly through the parking lot. It was Karen. She was following me.

I went straight to Miriam’s office. Once she combined her files with my flash drive, everything fell into place. They knew the machinery was dangerous and had falsified documents to hide it. One file even contained an audio recording of Nolan saying Jack was becoming a burden and needed to be “handled internally.”

My grief turned to fury. I wanted Karen on tape. After Miriam gave me the information from the drive, I called Karen and pretended to be hysterical, begging her to come over right away.

I hid a recording device in the garage. The moment she stepped inside she told me I was crazy for not signing. I said nothing; I simply let her watch the video of her argument with Jack.

She went pale. As I began naming each file she crumbled and confessed she had been falsifying reports because management had promised her a huge promotion. She kept insisting she never wanted Jack dead, yet she admitted she knew full well his life was in danger once he decided to expose the truth.

I will never forgive her for that. She knew his life was on the line, yet she stood beside me at her brother’s funeral shedding false tears. I looked straight into her eyes and told her she wasn’t sorry—she was only scared of going to jail.

I handed Miriam the recording at once. Before the day was over the factory had been raided, line seven was shut down, and Nolan was arrested at the airport. Karen was arrested at home for record tampering and obstruction of justice.

Jack’s death certainly wasn’t an accident now, but it’s hard to know how to tell the kids. Melissa asked whether Aunt Karen was evil. I told her that Karen had made terrible choices because fear and greed had taken hold of her.
