He wasn’t trying to lure my daughter into trouble.
He was trying to keep her hidden.
Then I noticed something.
The GPS tracker I had secretly installed in Emma’s car was still blinking on my phone.
Daniel saw it.
“That’s how they found her.”
I stared at the screen.
Someone else had been tracking the tracker.
My heart pounded.
“Who?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked toward the warehouse entrance.
The music suddenly stopped.
Every teenager became silent.
Then we heard footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming toward us.
Daniel grabbed Emma’s hand.
“Laura,” he whispered, “there’s one more thing you need to know.”
“What?”
He looked terrified for the first time.
“Robert isn’t the man you think he is.”
My phone buzzed.
A new notification appeared.
UNKNOWN DEVICE CONNECTED TO YOUR GPS TRACKER.
Then another message appeared.
WE KNOW WHERE YOU ARE.
I looked at Daniel.
He whispered, “We have less than five minutes.”
And that was when I realized the biggest lie of my life wasn’t that Daniel had died.
It was the lie I had been living with every night for sixteen years.
Because my husband Robert hadn’t simply been raising my daughter.
He had been waiting for the moment someone discovered who her real father was.
