“Because they belong to me.”

I looked at the faces around the room. Five attorneys. A stepfather posted near the door. My half-brother blocking the path to the hallway. My mother sitting across from me, ready to turn on the tears the second it served her.

“My father was completely lucid.”

The female attorney sitting beside the laptop added, “Probate litigation is notoriously expensive, Colonel. You have a public military career. I doubt you want the public scrutiny, headlines, or internal background checks that come with a messy lawsuit.”
There it was: the threat, wrapped in expensive legal jargon.
My mother lowered her voice, attempting to sound motherly. “Just sign, Sienna. We can end this tonight without any public embarrassment.”
I remembered my father in the hospital room two months before he died. I remembered his cold hand squeezing mine.
“Your mother is going to try to take what’s yours,” he had warned me softly. “First she’ll ask nicely. Then she’ll accuse you of being ungrateful. Then she’ll try to frighten you. Don’t believe a word she says.”

Julian dropped his phone onto the table. “Extortion? Mom, what is she talking about?”

Mr. Vance’s face didn’t change, but his fingers stopped tapping the table.

Richard took a step back from the window. “Arthur knew?”

Julian turned pale. “How do you know that?”
My mother bit her lip, realizing a second too late what she had blurted out.

One of the guest lawyers muttered something that sounded like a curse under his breath.
Richard turned on my mother. “Victoria, you told me that loan was already taken care of!”
“And it would have been if Sienna had just signed the papers!” she shouted in desperation.
“I’m not signing a single thing,” I said.
My mother gripped the back of her chair so hard her knuckles turned white. “You’ve always been like this. Cold. Unfeeling. Just like your father.”

Julian looked around the room. “What property?”

Richard set his glass down on the side table with a heavy thud. “Victoria… you told me that property belonged to your family trust.”
“It did!” she stammered.
“No,” I corrected her. “It was mine. And you forged my signature on the deed of sale to liquidate it.”
The room went completely, suffocatingly quiet.
Julian shook his head in disbelief. “Mom… tell me that’s not true.”
Eleanor pulled a certified deed copy from her stack and placed it on the table. “Handwritten signature comparison, irregular notary stamps, and a power of attorney form supposedly signed by Sienna while she was stationed on an active deployment overseas. My mother looked at Mr. Vance for help, but he was no longer acting like her advocate—he was acting like an attorney calculating his firm’s exposure to a fraud case.
“It was for the family,” my mother whimpered softly.
“You sold my grandmother’s house to fund Richard’s commercial development project,” I said.
Richard raised a hand to his mouth. “I… I was under the impression those funds came from a legitimate asset sale.”
“Maybe you were,” I said. “But you spent the money all the same.”
Julian stood up, unsteady on his feet. “Mom, tell me you didn’t forge Sienna’s signature on a land deed.”
My mother didn’t answer.

Mr. Vance stood up, adjusting his suit jacket. “I believe this meeting is adjourned.”
“Indeed,” I said. “The meeting ended the moment you realized I wasn’t an easy target.”
I turned toward the front entrance, but paused to look at Julian. “You deserve to know the full truth about what’s been going on in this house. When you’re ready to stop living on lies, give me a call.”
That night, as I sat in the passenger seat of Eleanor’s car, my phone vibrated.

“It’s Julian. I need to know what else she lied about.”
I looked down at the manila envelope in my hands. Inside was a single note from my father containing one explicit instruction:

The heavy metal door swung open.

Julian covered his face with his hands. “My God…”

I had to close the journal for a moment.
Inside the wooden box was a USB drive, an old cassette tape, and a photograph of my father standing with my grandmother in front of the Beacon Hill brownstone. On the back, written in his precise handwriting:

I named it the Aurora Foundation, after my grandmother.
Julian closed his failing Manhattan venture and opened a modest, successful bistro in Boston alongside David Miller. They didn’t become a perfect father and son overnight, but they learned how to sit at the same table without lies between them.
