Natalia Dontcheva Dies: Star of French Version of ‘Doc Martin’ Was 56
Bulgarian-born actress Natalia Dontcheva, best known for portraying Julie Derville in the French adaptation of Doc Martin, has died at the age of 56.
Dontcheva died on August 1 following a long illness. Her agent, Laurent Savry, confirmed the news in a statement celebrating her talent, sensitivity and commitment to acting.
“It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Natalia Dontcheva,” Savry said. He described her as a profoundly talented artist whose precise performances and elegance touched audiences throughout her career.
Remembered for ‘Doc Martin’
Dontcheva became widely recognized in France through the TF1 adaptation of the popular British medical comedy-drama Doc Martin. She played Julie Derville, a recurring character in the series, appearing across four seasons.
The French version followed Dr. Martin Le Foll, played by Thierry Lhermitte, as he left his career as a surgeon and settled in the fictional Breton village of Port-Garrec. Like its British inspiration, the series combined medical cases with humor, romance and the sometimes difficult relationship between an unconventional doctor and the local community.
Dontcheva’s warm and nuanced performance made Julie an important part of the show’s ensemble.
Her Doc Martin colleague Tatiana Gousseff remembered the laughter they shared while filming in Brittany. In a social media tribute, she recalled photographing Dontcheva at the port of Doëlan and described their time together as a collection of wonderful memories.
From Sofia to the French Stage
Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Dontcheva was the daughter of respected Bulgarian actor Plamen Donchev. Although she initially considered careers in medicine and international relations, an opportunity to appear in a Bulgarian film introduced her to acting.

She moved to France in 1989 and trained at an acting conservatory in Paris. Dontcheva established herself in theater during the 1990s before expanding her career into French television and cinema.
Her ability to move easily between drama and comedy helped her build a varied body of work. Colleagues admired not only her talent but also the elegance, intelligence and emotional depth she brought to her performances.
Film and Television Career
Beyond Doc Martin, Dontcheva appeared in numerous French films and television productions.
Her film credits included Le Voyage à Paris, Mauvais Esprit, Le Pressentiment, Le Siffleur, A Man and His Dog and Coursier. She also appeared in the television drama Infidèle, playing the character Ingrid.
International audiences may remember her from Emmanuel Mouret’s acclaimed 2018 period drama Mademoiselle de Joncquières, released internationally as Lady J. In the film, she appeared alongside Cécile de France, Édouard Baer and Alice Isaaz.
That same year, Dontcheva delivered a notable performance as Elena in the Canadian drama Sashinka. Her work earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at Quebec’s Prix Iris awards, further demonstrating the international reach of her career.
She also remained closely connected to the theater, where she was praised for the strength and precision of her stage performances.
Family Pays Emotional Tribute
Dontcheva shared her life for approximately 25 years with French director Arnaud Sélignac.
His son, producer Hugo Sélignac, posted an emotional tribute to the actress, expressing gratitude for the love, encouragement and unity she brought to their family. He said Dontcheva had fought hard to nurture their family bond and had always looked at him with pride.

Referring to her long struggle with illness, he wrote that she could finally rest after a battle lasting around ten years.
Actress Christine Citti also honored Dontcheva as a beautiful, talented, funny and loving person. She remembered her as someone capable of doing almost anything—from acting and creating to planting, building, sharing and loving.
