Part 1 – My Ten-Year-Old Daughter Stopped Calling, So I Went to Her Mother’s House

The Friday I was supposed to pick up my ten-year-old daughter Emily, she never came running down the front walk with her backpack half-zipped and three stories already waiting for me. Her phone went straight to voicemail, and although something felt wrong, I made the mistake of telling myself there had to be an ordinary explanation.

Since the divorce, I had worked hard not to turn every concern into another argument with my ex-wife Sarah. She had remarried a man named Jason, and although he was always polite when other adults were around, Emily became noticeably quieter whenever his name came up.
