The House I Quietly Bought

The letter arrived at 8:03 on the first morning of the month.

I was sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee, exactly where I had told myself I would be.

My suitcase was beside the back door.

Daniel picked up the envelope.

“Mom, did you order something?”

“No.”

Renata was pouring coffee. “Probably insurance junk.”

Daniel opened it.

His eyes moved across the first page.

“Why is the landlord changing the payment instructions?” he asked.

I took a slow sip of coffee.

Daniel kept reading.

“Effective immediately…”

He stopped.

His face had gone pale.
