A woman asked, “Is she asleep?”

Dale said, “She goes down at nine.”

Then the woman asked, “And Paula?”

“Second shift until eleven-thirty.”

I recognized that laugh.

It belonged to my sister, Colleen.

I had not spoken to Colleen since our father’s funeral.

I had spent years thinking she blamed me for the way our father’s estate had been handled. She had never forgiven me for refusing to sell the old family property.
