Months later, Mark came to see the girls during one of his scheduled visits. Grace and Lily were growing stronger, while Hope still required additional monitoring but had already surprised every doctor who had warned me to prepare for complications.
Mark held Hope carefully against his chest and stared at her for a long time. When she wrapped her tiny fingers around one of his, his eyes filled with tears.
“I missed everything.”
I stood several feet away, watching him finally understand what those four days had cost him. He had missed their first cries, their first nights, their first medical victories, and the terrifying hours when nobody knew whether Hope would stabilize.
“Yes.”
He looked toward me.
“Is there really no way back?”
I didn’t answer immediately because I wanted to be certain my response came from clarity rather than anger. Then I looked at my three daughters and thought about the woman I had been before their birth, constantly teaching a grown man how to choose his own family.
“No.”
Mark lowered his head.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
And I did believe he was sorry. But remorse could not reverse the moment he saw my name flashing on his phone and decided that Madison deserved his attention more than his wife and unborn daughters.
A year later, the girls celebrated their first birthday surrounded by people who had shown up consistently throughout the hardest year of our lives. Grace smashed both hands into her cake, Lily carefully tasted the frosting before demanding more, and Hope laughed louder than either of her sisters.
After everyone left, I carried them upstairs one by one and tucked them into their beds. The nursery looked different from the one Mark had found empty months earlier, but the three wooden signs still hung above their cribs.
Grace. Lily. Hope.
I stood in the doorway for several minutes, remembering the emergency room, the unanswered calls, and the moment I had signed the consent form without knowing whether all four of us would survive.
