Then a black SUV slowed beside the curb.
The driver’s window rolled down.
“Elena?”
I froze.
“Dad…”
General Robert Hayes stepped out immediately. Even in jeans and a polo shirt, he carried the quiet authority of a man who had spent decades commanding soldiers.
His eyes moved from my ankle to his grandson, then to the grocery bags in my hands.
“What happened?”
“I’m fine,” I said weakly.
He didn’t believe me.

I nodded.

I couldn’t answer.

“No argument.”

Dad nodded slowly.
“And what do you say?”

“I say I’m tired.”
He covered my hand for one second.

He carried Caleb to the door while I limped beside him.
Diane opened it before I could knock. She looked from me to my father to the sleeping baby in his arms.
“Oh,” she said with a social smile. “Elena. You’re later than expected.”
Dad introduced himself calmly.
Diane glanced over his casual clothes and clearly remained unimpressed.
Then Aaron appeared in the hallway.
“Elena? What happened?”
“I walked from the market.”
“With Caleb?”
Diane sighed. “She’s making it sound worse than it is. The market isn’t that far.”
“It’s two miles,” Dad said.
Her smile tightened.
“Mr. Hayes, this is a family matter.”
“I agree,” he said.

Dad set Caleb gently in the portable crib, then turned to Diane.
“Where is the SUV?”
She blinked.

Diane laughed shortly.
“Elena has been dramatic lately. The car is in Aaron’s name, and while they live here, we are helping them make responsible choices.”
“Responsible?” Dad repeated.
“She spends too much. Goes out too often. She needs structure.”
“I go to the grocery store,” I said. “And Caleb’s appointments.”
“You also had lunch with your friend last week.”
“It was her birthday.”
“And you bought coffee.”
“It was three dollars.”
“It adds up.”
Dad looked at Aaron.
“Do you agree with this?”
Aaron opened his mouth, then closed it.
That hurt more than Diane’s words.
Finally, he asked, “Mom, why did you take the car?”
“Because someone has to maintain order.”
I heard my own voice rise.
“I changed everything. I moved into your house, sold our furniture, stopped working weekends, cook, clean, care for your grandson, apply for remote jobs during naps, and pretend not to hear you telling your friends I don’t understand sacrifice.”
Diane tried to deny it.
“You said it yesterday in the kitchen,” I said.
Then I looked at Aaron.
“And you heard her.”
His face went pale.
“I should have said something.”
“Yes,” I said.
Diane turned on him, but Aaron finally found his voice.
“You took us in, Mom. Then you started treating my wife like a guest who overstayed.”

That was the first honest thing she had said all night.
Dad leaned forward.
“Then say you’re scared. Say you don’t know how to help without taking over. But do not put that fear on Elena until she cannot walk home safely.”
Aaron sat beside me.
“I’m not helping either,” he admitted. “I keep saying I lost my job like it explains everything. Every rejection makes me feel smaller, and every time Mom takes over, part of me is relieved because then I don’t have to decide.”
He looked at me.
“I thought I was keeping peace. I was keeping my comfort.”
Dad nodded.
“That is a beginning.”
When everyone looked to me, I finally spoke.
“I’m not staying here tonight.”
