PART 1: THE ANNOUNCEMENT HE EXPECTED ME TO ACCEPT

Michael Harper waited until our wedding reception was well underway before telling me what he and his mother had apparently already decided. As the band played and nearly two hundred guests celebrated around us, he leaned close enough that I could smell whiskey on his breath.

“My mother will move into your apartment now.”

For a moment, I honestly thought I had misunderstood him. The ballroom around us was glowing beneath chandeliers, champagne glasses covered the tables, ivory roses filled the centerpieces, and everyone still believed they were witnessing the happiest evening of my life.
