The police officer stood beneath the porch light while rain slid from the brim of his cap.

“My name is Officer Bennett,” he said. “Your sister is concerned about the safety of her children.”

I looked at Laura.

She kept her eyes lowered.

My parents stood behind her like witnesses at a trial.

I stepped aside.

“I’d rather we discuss this outside,” he said.
