“This was hidden in Mom’s old safe.”
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Laura’s handwriting.
My hands trembled as I read the first line.
“If you’re reading this, then Daniel has finally come back.”
I couldn’t breathe.
The letter explained that Laura had known Daniel would eventually return—not for Grace, but for the inheritance.
She had prepared for it years before her death.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
It said:
“I know you will want to protect Grace from him. But please don’t teach her to hate him. Let her see the truth for herself. And if she ever chooses you over him, remind her that you were never her replacement father. You were her father all along.”
I couldn’t hold back my tears.
Grace was crying too.
Then she reached into her bag and pulled out one final document.
It was the adoption paperwork.
She had signed something.
I looked at her confused.
“What is this?”
She smiled through her tears.
“I’m legally changing my last name.”
I stared at her.
“To what?”
She wiped her cheeks.
“Yours.”
For ten years, I had believed I was the man keeping a promise to Laura.
