Part 1: Torn Clothes, Hidden Truth

The afternoon before my brother Brandon’s wedding, I stood in the old guest room staring at the only dress I had packed. Someone had sliced clean holes through every piece of clothing in my suitcase, and the neat cuts made it obvious this wasn’t an accident.

“You’re not wearing that to the rehearsal dinner, are you?”

My mother stood behind me with folded arms, completely unbothered by what she had done. She glanced at the shredded navy dress and smiled as though she had improved it instead of destroying it.

“This actually suits you better.”
