That was the exact amount printed at the bottom of the estimate from Dr. Karen Miles’s office in Cleveland. My insurance refused to cover it because the procedure was “urgent but not immediately life-threatening.”
I laughed when I read those words.
Not because they were funny.
Because if I didn’t laugh, I would have cried right there in the clinic hallway.
My left eye had already gone cloudy. My right eye was starting to fail too. Dr. Miles leaned toward me and spoke gently.
“Mrs. Bennett, if we do this within two weeks, we have a strong chance of saving your vision. If we wait too long, I can’t promise the result.”

“Answer me.”
I looked from him to his wife. Neither asked how the surgery went. Neither asked whether I could see. Neither asked if I was in pain.
“Yes,” I said. “She helped me.”
Vanessa scoffed. “Unbelievable.”
Marcus ran a hand through his hair. “How much?”
“That is none of your business.”
“It became my business when my name got dragged into it.”
I frowned. “What are you talking about?”
Vanessa stepped forward. “Lily posted something.”
“She didn’t name you,” I said, though I had not seen the post.
“She didn’t have to,” Vanessa snapped. “Everyone knows. People are asking why Brandon’s mother had to get help from his adopted sister while he’s buying lake property.”
Marcus pointed at me. “Do you know how humiliating this is?”

“Then give the money back to Lily,” Marcus said.
“No.”
His head snapped up. “No?”

I added the amounts once, then again because I thought I had made a mistake.

For a moment, I could not speak.
