“Mommy, Grandma puts a white powder in your tea when she thinks no one is watching,” my eight-year-old daughter Danielle said to me while I was standing in our quiet living room in San Diego.

I was folding a crisp shirt belonging to my husband, Donald, and I felt the fabric bunch tightly in my fist as her words sank in.
