“My husband had been dead for five years when I saw him get off a flight at Miami International Airport, holding his mother’s hand.”

I had just returned from Toronto after three weeks negotiating a contract for the company Gabriel and I had founded. It was almost four in the afternoon and the terminal was packed with travelers. I was dragging my suitcase, exhausted, when I recognized a back I couldn’t forget: a navy blue suit, a slightly droopy right shoulder, and the habit of rubbing his cufflink with his thumb.

I dropped my luggage on the cold floor.
