I gave my husband’s family $10,000 every month until my mother-in-law demanded another $5,000 at dinner. When I refused, my husband sl@pped me and growled, “Do as you’re told.” I quietly wiped the bl00d from my lip, called my lawyer, and smiled. They had no idea one financial audit would destroy their entire family.

PART 1

“Starting next month, you’ll be depositing 15,000 dollars into our account, Clara. And don’t make that face. You’re my son’s wife. That’s what you’re here for.”

My mother-in-law, Teresa, said it calmly as she cut into a chicken leg at my own dining table. She didn’t ask.

She announced it, as if my bank account were simply an extension of her wallet.

It was Sunday evening. Rain fell over the Riverside neighborhood, and the dining room smelled of almond mole. I’d been cooking since morning to host Julian’s family. At the head of the table sat my father-in-law, Richard, who struggled with high blood pressure. Beside him, my brother-in-law, Marcus, scrolled through his phone, dreaming about opening an electronics shop downtown. His wife, Serena, proudly showed off wine-colored nails and a designer handbag I had paid for three months earlier.

My husband, Julian Vance, never even looked up from his phone.

My name is Clara Vance. I’m thirty-five years old and serve as the financial director of a pharmaceutical company in Baltimore. People always said I was lucky. I had a successful career, my own apartment, and an educated husband.

What no one knew was that for the past five years, I had transferred ten thousand dollars every single month to Julian’s family. On top of that, I paid for Richard’s medical appointments, prescription medications, utility bills, Julian’s car insurance, and Marcus’s endless “emergencies,” which somehow always turned into new sneakers or expensive dinners.

“Teresa, if there’s a genuine medical expense, we’ll review it,” I said calmly. “But I’m not increasing the monthly support.”

My mother-in-law slowly set down her fork.

“Support?” she repeated. “Is that what you call fulfilling your responsibilities to your family? My son gave you his last name. The least you can do is contribute.”

Marcus let out a dry laugh.

“Come on, sis. Fifteen thousand dollars is nothing to you. One more spreadsheet, one less spreadsheet.”

Serena smiled with fake sweetness.

“Besides, a family like ours can’t afford to look poor. I have a christening to attend on Saturday, and I can’t show up wearing just anything.”

I looked at Julian, waiting for him to say something.

He sighed with annoyance. “Don’t start. My mom’s only asking for what’s fair.”

That’s when I understood. This wasn’t a discussion. It was a bill.

I gently set my fork on the table.

“No. Starting today, I want complete transparency. If the money is for medication, bring me prescriptions. If it’s for Marcus, then say so. If it’s for handbags, manicures, or personal luxuries, don’t call it a family obligation.”
