“That cupcake is for the important guests, not for a starving little boy,” my mother-in-law shouted before slapping my five-year-old son across the face in the middle of my sister-in-law’s wedding.

The crack of her hand was louder than the mariachi band.

Leo lost his balance, dropped to his knees on the polished ballroom floor, and the vanilla cupcake rolled away before ending up crushed beside his tiny shoes. 

For a moment, everything else carried on as if nothing had happened—the glasses clinked, the golden lights shimmered, and guests smiled for the cameras. 

But inside me, something broke with a sharp, unmistakable snap.
