PART 1

“Don’t make a scene over a seat, Annalise. Behave like a mature woman.”

That was the first thing Jared Parham told me when, after running through the crowded corridors of Atlanta International Airport, I managed to board the flight to Miami just three minutes before they closed the boarding gate. He did not even ask why I looked pale, soaked in sweat, and completely out of breath.

My business class window seat was already occupied by Kiera Parker, the team’s new intern. She had Jared’s tailored jacket draped over her lap while he leaned back in his seat, gently stroking her hair as he whispered to her to breathe, not to be afraid of flying, and that he would personally take care of her.
