I couldn’t stop laughing.
My wife couldn’t either.
At first, it was awkward.
Then it became completely absurd.
The Ring
The next afternoon, Jason drove over.
We exchanged bags in the driveway.
Inside my own golf bag was a small velvet jewelry box tucked exactly where I’d hidden it.
I handed it to my wife.
She opened it carefully.
The diamond sparkled in the afternoon sunlight.
She covered her mouth.
“You really bought it for me.”
“I told you.”
“You also lied.”
“I did.”
“And I destroyed your car.”
“You definitely did.”
We both burst into laughter.
What We Learned
The insurance covered the broken window.
The golf club was replaced.
Jason still jokes that he almost accidentally proposed to my wife.
But the biggest lesson had nothing to do with luggage.
I realized surprises aren’t always worth protecting with lies.
One unnecessary lie nearly destroyed years of trust.
My wife admitted she should have asked more questions before letting her anger take over.
Now, whenever either of us leaves on a business trip, we check every bag before loading it into the car.
And every anniversary, she smiles, points at my golf bag, and says with a laugh,
“Mind if I make sure there aren’t any tennis rackets hiding in there?”
