I Came Home Early and Found My Wife Unconscious While My Mother Finished the Dinner She Had Forced Her to Cook

The Cry Behind the Door

I heard my newborn son before I even put the key into the front door.

His cries were sharp, breathless, and filled with a kind of fear no parent could ignore. They were not the ordinary sounds of a baby asking to be held. They were desperate cries that seemed to reach straight through the walls of our small house in Boise, Idaho.

I had returned home nearly three hours earlier than expected because a meeting at work had been canceled. I remember feeling relieved as I pulled into the driveway. My wife, Laurel, had come home from the hospital only two days earlier, and I had been worried about leaving her alone.
