The Boy Who Asked Me to Walk Him Home

A quiet seven-year-old boy approached me outside an elementary school one Tuesday afternoon and asked a question I would remember for the rest of my career.

“Officer, could you walk home with me?”

I looked down at him, expecting him to say that he had lost his key, missed the bus, or was afraid to cross a busy street alone.

Instead, he tightened both hands around the straps of his oversized backpack and added:

“Something is wrong at my house, but I can’t explain it here. You have to see it yourself.”
