Part 1: The House They Stole Before I Even Moved In

The security notification appeared on my phone at exactly 6:18 that evening while I sat in the office break room eating a sad vending-machine salad under harsh fluorescent lights. At first, I almost ignored it. During the previous few days, every alert from my new lakeside house had been harmless, whether it was a raccoon wandering across the deck, the wind rattling the gate, or delivery drivers dropping off furniture and curtains I hadn’t even unpacked yet.

This time, however, something was different.

Blue and silver balloons floated beneath the vaulted ceiling of my living room. Music echoed through the speakers, laughter filled the house, and champagne glasses clinked together as though someone were celebrating. Then the camera shifted, and I saw my older brother, Owen, standing confidently in front of my stone fireplace with a drink raised high above his head.
