Part 1: The Wedding-Day Emergency

On the morning of my sister-in-law Megan’s wedding, I woke with a sharp pain beneath my ribs.

At first, I blamed the rehearsal dinner. My mother-in-law, Linda, had spent months reminding everyone that nothing—not traffic, illness, bad weather, or what she called “unnecessary drama”—would be allowed to interfere with Megan’s perfect wedding in Charleston.

By nine o’clock, I could barely stand.

My husband, Daniel, found me on the bathroom floor of our hotel room, sweating through my bridesmaid robe.

“We’re going to the emergency room,” he said.

I tried to protest. Megan was his only sister. Daniel was supposed to escort their widowed mother to her seat, and I was expected to appear in the family photographs.
