I always thought I knew exactly what kind of man I had married.

My husband, Daniel, wasn’t perfect.

He could be stubborn. He hated admitting when he was wrong. And whenever we argued, he had an irritating habit of going completely silent until he decided the conversation was over.

But I never believed he was cruel.

Especially not toward children.

That’s why one casual conversation completely shattered the picture I had of him.

It happened on a Saturday afternoon.

I was leaving a small coffee shop when someone called my name.

I turned around and immediately recognized Ryan.

He had been one of Daniel’s closest friends in college, although I hadn’t seen him in years.

We talked for a few minutes about old times.

“Do you still talk to Daniel?”

He sat down slowly.

My heart sank.

He finally looked at me.

I blinked.

I knew Daniel had an older sister.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Everything.”

He explained that several years earlier, Vanessa had gone through a terrible financial crisis.

She had lost her job, fallen behind on her mortgage, and was raising two children alone.

Daniel said he had promised to help her temporarily.
