PART 1

“Eat fast and get out to the backyard! I don’t want my guests seeing a pair of rednecks sitting around here.”

I caught my mother’s harsh voice echoing from the entrance of the service kitchen just as she dumped half a bowl of lukewarm soup over my in-laws’ plates. Arthur and Eleanor sat on two cheap plastic stools right next to the industrial trash cans, holding stale dinner rolls and scraps of beef they had collected off discarded trays.

Outside, in the manicured gardens of my estate in Paradise Valley, Scottsdale, fifty tables stood arranged under string lights. A live band played, imported champagne flowed, and nearly three hundred guests celebrated the one-month milestone of my newborn son, Ethan.
