Part 1: The Room They Thought Was Theirs

Saturday dinner had barely begun when Monica Bennett pointed across the table at me.

“Give your bedroom to Dylan, or pack your things and leave.”

My father, Richard, stared at his plate. My twenty-two-year-old stepbrother leaned back with the smile of someone who already believed he had won.

Monica claimed Dylan deserved my upstairs room because it had a private bathroom. She spoke as though I were a temporary guest instead of the person who had paid the property taxes, roof repairs, and half the mortgage for four years.

I did not argue.
