What he was looking for in my study was proof of that removal, so that he could attempt to contest it before I died. He will find nothing, because there is nothing left for him to find.”

“And the letters,” Eleanor added, more softly now, her eyes distant. “Charles Callahan died eleven years ago. I never told anyone, not even my own children, that I once loved a man more than I ever loved my husband. Those letters are the only proof that I was ever capable of loving anyone at all. I’m not embarrassed that you found them, Doris. I’m only sorry it took you three years to feel safe enough to tell me.”

Eleanor reached across the table and, for what may have been the first time in 38 years, took Doris’s hand in her own.

“Take whatever time you need for Emily. Take six months if that’s what it takes. This house has stood for eighty years without falling down, and it will still be standing when you return. You are not just my housekeeper, Doris. You are the only family I have left who never once wanted anything from me — until today, when you finally asked for something you deserved decades ago.”
