The Sandwich in My Backpack

I was eleven years old the day my father’s world fell apart, and mine along with it.

He’d worked at Halden Manufacturing for almost fourteen years — long enough that I genuinely believed nothing could touch us. He left for work at 6 a.m. every day in the same faded blue jacket, and came home smelling like machine oil and exhaustion, but always with a joke for me at the dinner table. We weren’t rich. We were never rich. But we were steady. Steady felt like safety.
