Part 1 – A Seven-Year-Old Boy Asked Me to Walk Him Home

After spending several years working patrol around Evergreen Elementary in West Portland, I believed I’d seen nearly every problem a child could bring to a police officer. Lost backpacks, playground arguments, forgotten parents, scraped knees, and the occasional dispute over whose turn it was to use the swings all blended together after a while. Then one ordinary afternoon, just as dismissal ended, a little boy quietly walked up beside me without saying a word. Something about the way he waited calmly instead of trying to get my attention immediately made me turn before he ever spoke.
