The Recovery Suite

Three hours after delivering twins through an emergency cesarean section, I was lying inside a private recovery suite at Hawthorne Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Every movement pulled painfully across my abdomen, but the transparent bassinets beside my bed contained two reasons for enduring everything.

My son, Noah, slept with one fist tucked beneath his cheek, while my daughter, Grace, occasionally moved her lips as though arguing with somebody inside a dream. They were stable, healthy, and entirely unaware that their grandmother had already decided one of them belonged to somebody else.
