“Your husband and daughter’s funeral was not reason enough to ruin our vacation.”

That was the exact text message my mother sent me while I stood in front of two coffins under an icy rain that fell over the cemetery in Savannah, Georgia.

In the large coffin lay Anthony, my husband of eleven years, and in the small one covered in white roses lay our seven-year-old daughter, Paisley.

My parents did not show up, and neither did my younger brother.
