“My daddy said he’d only be gone for thirty minutes…”

The tiny voice trembled so badly that the 911 operator almost missed the rest of the sentence beneath the sound of heavy rain.

“But it’s been four whole days.”

Eric immediately sat forward in his chair. Calls from frightened children always demanded extra patience, and this little girl sounded exhausted before she even finished speaking. The address on his monitor led to a modest rental home in a working-class neighborhood where everyone knew each other’s routines, yet somehow no one had realized a seven-year-old had been alone for days.
