I left work early on my son’s first birthday and came home to find my mother serving seafood to twenty relatives while my wife washed dishes with our sick baby in her arms. “I’m the one in charge in this house,” she declared.

“In this house, I am the one who makes the rules, and your wife is only good for popping out babies and washing dishes,” my mother said loudly as she handed out glasses of bourbon and plates of pulled pork to nearly twenty relatives sitting on my back patio in Nashville.
