Julian’s head snapped toward the attorney. “You did what?”

“You took out a corporate loan six months ago,” Mr. Harrison explained, pulling a document from the envelope. “You pledged this residence and its perceived equity as collateral. However, since you never owned the property, the loan agreement was fraudulent. When Mrs. Vance assumed control of the trust this morning, we immediately notified the lender.”

Chloe gasped from the doorway, her foot hovering near the threshold. “Julian… you told me the firm was worth millions! You said we were buying the condo in Aspen next month!”

“Shut up, Chloe!” Julian snapped, dropping his composure entirely.

“You used my home to cover your debts,” I said softly, the realization settling in. “That’s why you wanted me out today. You thought if you served me with divorce papers and got me out of the house, you could claim constructive ownership before anyone audited the title.”

I sat at the heavy oak dining table, a warm cup of tea resting between my hands. Across from me, Maya and Liam were quietly eating lunch, color returning to their cheeks as the tension of the morning faded into the background.

My phone rang. It was Beatrice.

“He called me from a hotel,” my mother-in-law said, her voice tired but resolute. “He tried to ask for money from my estate to cover his legal fees.”

“And what did you say?” I asked quietly.

“I told him that Eleanor Vance was a far better judge of character than I ever was,” she replied. “He made his bed, Clara. He can sleep in it. But I want to see my grandchildren.”

“You can see them whenever you like, Beatrice,” I said, feeling a knot in my chest loosen. “You were never the problem.”

After I hung up, I walked over to the large bay window overlooking the front yard. The black town car was still parked at the curb, a silent sentinel ensuring our peace wouldn’t be disrupted again.

For eleven years, I had shrunk myself to fit into Julian’s world. I had edited transcripts late into the night, calculated every meal budget down to the cent, and believed him whenever he implied that my contribution to our family was lesser because it didn’t come with a corporate title or a massive paycheck.
