“Don’t say Donald’s name here, honey! If his thugs hear us, they might take Keaton away again.”

Those terrifying words came out of my mother’s mouth while she sat on a piece of cardboard near the entrance to the central subway station, my six-year-old son sleeping fitfully in her arms. I had just returned to the city after working for five years as a live-in caregiver for an elderly couple in Miami. During all that time, I had sent my husband exactly thirty-five thousand dollars a month to build our dream house, support my aging parents, and give Keaton a better life.
