All my life, Dad drilled one thing into me: “Straight A’s, or no future.”
I tried—I really did—but sophomore year was brutal. Between juggling classes, work-study, and a minor health scare, I ended up with a few B’s.

Dad saw the grades, and that was it.
He canceled my college fund. “A deal’s a deal,” he said coldly, like he hadn’t once promised, “I’ll always support your dreams.”

I was crushed. But I picked myself up. Applied for aid. Got a second job. Finished school with debt—but also with pride.

Then, at my graduation party, surrounded by family and friends, Dad stood up with a glass of champagne.
“I’m so proud,” he said. “I always told her she could do anything. And of course, I paid for her education. That’s what dads do.”

Everyone clapped.

I stood, smiling tightly.
“Actually,” I said, voice calm but clear, “Dad didn’t pay for anything. He pulled funding after I got a few B’s. So I worked, borrowed, and hustled my way here.”

The silence was deafening.
Dad’s smile vanished. Mom looked away. My aunt gasped.
