The words were so small, so ordinary, after decades of extraordinary silence. I thought about all the times I had needed to talk and been met with a turned back or a changed subject. Put the phone away. Started the engine. The sedan was waiting to escort me to the Pentagon, and I had a country to protect. Family, after all, is not always the people who share your blood. Sometimes it’s the people who see you when no one else does—and in my case, those people wore stars and had never once asked me to be smaller.
